Performing Arts

A region of more than a million, Alberta’s capital offers you a great selection of entertainment, even when there’s no festival happening. Get out about town, and you’ll see why Edmonton was named Canada’s Cultural Capital in 2007.

Whatever your taste runs to, Shakespeare, jazz, creative DJs, or standup comics, you’ll find all of that here, and more. The city enjoys an active, diverse cultural scene.

As theatre and performing arts thrive here in Edmonton, the Citadel Theatre is one of Canada’s most distinguished theatres and the stunning Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium ranked as the 5th busiest theatre in Canada in 2008.

Live Theatre

In the Downtown Arts District, you can take in a great play at the regal Citadel Theatre. Its five theatrical spaces present classics and family-oriented plays. Other local theatres showcase wider choices, like edgy new dramas and improvised soap opera.

Learn more about the Citadel theatre through the stories of peope who've experienced it at www.edmontonstories.ca.

Live Music and Dance

You’ll want to experience the exquisite acoustics of Winspear Centre, one of the finest performance spaces in North America. Its Davis Concert Organ, with 6,551 pipes, is visually spectacular as well as an aural delight. If you enjoy high culture, you must see Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and Edmonton Opera perform. Another fine choice is Alberta Ballet.

Active, Eclectic Arts Scene

The Edmonton arts scene goes well beyond grand venues. This city buzzes with grassroots and alternative music and all kinds of art forms. The Bearclaw Gallery carries a diverse selection of Canadian First Nations art including traditional Native Canadian art, depicting the true essence of our culture and history as Candians.

You’ll find, too, amidst all the sophistication of a big city, Edmontonians are typically friendly and easygoing.
