Utilities

You will probably need to arrange for utilities. Some apartments are rented with all utilities included in the monthly rent. However, for most rental units you will be responsible for opening accounts to pay for these services.

When you buy a home, you must arrange hook-up of electrical power, natural gas (for heating), and water.

If you choose a regulated service, the regulated rate electricity and natural gas providers in your area will provide energy to you. If you decide you want to buy from a competitive retailer, you can compare the various competitive retailers’ offers and sign a contract with the company you choose.

Check when you rent

Renters should check with their landlords for details about which utilities they need to pay and then arrange to pay them.

You might have to pay a deposit

When you sign up for utilities, you will be asked to show identification, and an initial deposit may be charged to ensure you pay your bills on time. It will be refunded after approximately 12 months of prompt payments, or when you move, whichever comes first.
