The world’s fastest triathletes travel to iconic cities to compete head-to-head in Standard and Sprint distance races for a chance to be crowned World Champion. Previously hosted by Edmonton in 2001, since 2014, Edmonton has hosted the ITU World Triathlon, attracting more than 4,000 athletes, and a worldwide television audience of approximately 40 million in 160 countries. Economic impact from the 2016 event alone is projected at $600,000, accounting for spend that includes hotel nights and hospitality.

After a successful 2014 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final hosted in Edmonton, for which the event won the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance Prestige Award for International Event of the year, Edmonton has secured a five year commitment, ending in 2019. A shining example of why Edmonton is regarded as a terrific host city, the ITU World Triathlon event is a true partnership between Edmonton Events, the City of Edmonton and the International Triathlon Union.

The ITU World Triathlon is one of two events that form September’s Race Week in Edmonton, the other being the Tour of Alberta. Stay up to date with Race Week happenings by visiting Edmonton Tourism’s Race Week page.
