Are We Future Proof?

Edmonton, Alberta – September 27, 2016 – An estimated 1.8 million square feet of commercial office space will be coming online in the downtown in the next 24 months. With that, Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC), BOMA, and DIRTT are holding an event about innovative ways to modernize and repurpose vacant infrastructure.

At the “Are We Future Proof?” event on September 27, DIRTT will demonstrate how to transition an office environment into a health care space in less than an hour using their prefabricated interior technology. With our office market vacancy at 11.9%, a need to transform our vacant buildings and spaces to accommodate industries who wouldn’t typically be found in office towers is essential to keeping downtown vibrant and diverse.

“This demonstration of transforming traditional office spaces is a great example of providing creative solutions for an important economic challenge facing this city. After a period of downtown construction and reinvention, providing new outlooks on our vacant spaces will activate them in a way we have not seen before.”

– Cheryll Watson, Vice-President, Urban Economy, EEDC

“Our space needs, and especially technology, will continue to evolve, so it only makes sense that we build environments that can be agile with us. Our skyline is changing, and Edmonton has an opportunity to steward a completely innovative approach to smart infrastructure and development. This is the future of our office buildings—health care labs, day cares, vertical farms, student housing—and Edmonton can be a leader.”

– Alyssa Lefaivre, DIRTT

“Edmonton has seen millions of dollars in capital investment over the past few years, adding 1.8 million square feet to the Edmonton commercial real estate market. This is a great opportunity for us to do something different with these buildings, to be creative and innovative in how we use these spaces.”

– Percy Woods, President & CEO, BOMA Edmonton
