Edmonton, Alberta – November 14, 2016 – Edmonton received the City Nation Place Award for Best Expression of Place Brand Identity on November 10, 2016. The Awards recognize the best in place branding and were announced at the annual City Nation Place Conference in London, England.
Edmonton’s submission was focused on the Make Something Edmonton initiative, a partnership between the City of Edmonton and Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, which highlighted a grassroots approach to identity and brand-building undertaken over the past four years. Other finalists included Sweden, Costa Rica, and Tartarstan, Russia.
“This is an incredible achievement for our city and for the thousands of Edmontonians involved. For decades we struggled to find the words to talk about and promote what we love about our city, and it is fantastic to have our work over the past four years recognized on the global stage.” says Brad Ferguson, President & CEO. “I would also like to thank Todd Babiak and the Story Engine team for their relentless work in our community, and for entering this initiative into the running for this award.”
EEDC’s effort on identity and place branding over the past four years has built the foundation for the marketing and promotion of investment & trade, talent attraction, tourism, conferences & conventions and major events. “This has been all part of a 10-year plan to build our image and reputation. We have seen the benefits in tourism through our “#ExploreEdmonton” platform, and we will be doing the same in other categories right away” adds Ferguson.
