EEDC’s Trade and Investment division hosted leading e-commerce companies in Edmonton to meet with local export-ready companies interested in exploring the Chinese consumer market. Alibaba, the leading platform for global wholesale trade, and Vipshop, a second Chinese e-commerce marketplace, participated in the largest of four cross-Canada workshops for small and medium-sized enterprises. The workshop was an opportunity for Edmonton businesses to understand e-commerce in China and opportunities with Alibaba to be a sourcing and export platform to do business with the rest of the world.
Edmonton has been a region of interest for e-commerce retailers for some time, focused on food products and supplements. With Canada’s only direct access to mainland China via the Air China Cargo Flight from the Edmonton International Airport, businesses in the region have an incredible opportunity to grow their market and revenues through export to China. Notably, China is Canada’s and Alberta’s second largest trading partner.
